Uu Us - Taste

We took another extra day for the ‘Uu Us – Human Body’ unit. I still have a bunch of things for this unit that we didn’t cover but it will have to wait for days we need extra work I guess because I don’t want to delay the rest of their schooling, we are already behind because of this unexpected pregnancy.
Tomorrow starts the ‘Dd Dinosaur’ unit for Abby and the ‘Rivers’ week for Anabel.
BUT today we focused and the body. We did the digestive system, the tongue and the taste buds and we even did a ball joint experiment.
Here are some pictures:
We read about the digestive system:

And as we read about the digestive system we put the life sized felt body of the digestive system together. We learned about the intestines and how the small intestine is about 20ft long and the large intestine about 5ft long so I can two pieces of yarn, one 20ft and one 5ft and had the girls stretch them out to see how long those measurements were. They were so shocked, it was cute!.

Then we moved on to the sense ‘taste.

We read about the tongue and then I had them use the magnifying glass to check out their tongues.

Then we made a simple tongue activity. Above is the sample I made and used to explain about taste buds.
Then I had them draw their own:

We also did a work sheet and talked about what things are ‘bitter, sour, salty and sweet’

Then we looked at the Magic School Bus science kit I had bought them and read about ‘ball joints’ and did the experiment that went with it.

They had a lot of fun learning these things and asking questions. At the very end I took all the pieces off the felt body and had them take turns trying to put it back together how it was suppose to go. They enjoyed this as well
