Trees - MFW 1st Grade - Week 5

We have learned so much about trees the last couple of days! MFW gives you two little pages to read about a subject in science but i like to get online and find more ideas to help not only learn more but have it get instilled.

This year i have found 'lap books' to be very helpful, they always have a ton of information about a given subject.

This page below, we learned about a trees life cycle (cue my little drawings lol). Learned about 'tree seeds' which i had her look in the 'Trees of the Northeast Dover Coloring Book', pick out trees she liked and draw/color the seeds on the flap. Each section of the lap book by the way has a ton of information to read so we not only drew pictures but i also read about that particular thing.

Here we read about leaves and i laminated a leaf to the flap. Below that we learned about how we can use trees and then i had her draw/color the different things she learned. She chose to draw about the fruits and nuts trees give us. Also about how we can take sap and make syrup (thanks Curious George hehe) and how we can use wood to make a fire and keep us warm.

Then we learned about how trees get it's nutrients by the earth, water, wind and the sun. We also learned about the different 'types' of trees.

Next we learned about roots!

Lastly i found the page in the tree Dover book on our states tree and had her color that while i read to her about the Cottonwood.

So far we have learned so much! Next school day i plan on doing some 'tree' art :) looking forward to that!
